The steady downpour of rain recently shows how our weather can change very rapidly. The hot spell of June and July has been replaced by cooler days and nights yet most of us would count ourselves fortunate in this area to be safely away from the risk of flooding.
No so for the 20 million people in Pakistan who have recently who have experienced the most devasting of disasters as raging flood waters have destroyed homes and infra structure over an area the size of England. With the loss of thousands of lives, could anyone predicted such a disaster and if so what could they have done about it?
When in the book of Genesis we read the account of the fllod we perhaps tend to skip over the part where it describes how every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out, including men, animals and birds.
“only Noah was left and those with him” (Gen 7vs 23)
How they must have been grateful to faithfull old Noah for constructing their lifeline to safety when to every one else it must have seemed as if he was on a fool’s errand.
Sadly for those suffering from the effects of so called “natural disasters’ it is a painful reminder that manking is unable to control the elements.
Only God can do that and only he can provide the ultimate place of safety for men and women. He made a promise that never again would he send a flood to destroy all life but that does not mean that natural disasters will not continue to occur throughout the earth.
We all have an invitation to board the ark of safety, that’s what we find when we find Jesus. Only in Him can we find true safety and hope for the future. Whatever perils and dangers we might face in our lives, he came to rescue us, but like Noah’s family, we have to get ourselves on board if we are going to be saved.
