God exceeds our expectations – Eph 3:20

Many of you know that I enjoy playing golf. That’s not to say I play very well. Perhaps its better to say my enthusiasm for golf exceeds my natural ability to play the game! In any event, whilst occupied with a busy job, time does not allow me to practice as much as I would like. However that does give me an excuse as to why I’m not better than I am.

God promises us in Ephesians Ch3 v20 (see front) that he can and will do exceedingly more than we ask or think. Do you believe that?

One of my favourite stories or illustrations of this promise is related to golf. The story goes that a famous golfer visited one of the Gulf States to be the centrepiece of a golfing tournament. The ruling king of the country was thrilled with the success of the event and the performance of the golfer. He wanted to thank him and so he called the golfer to his palace and asked him to name the gift he wanted. Embarrassed by all the attention, he initially declined, but when pressed, he suggested the King might like to give him a golf club. The king smiled and the audience finished.

As the golfer was driven away, he imagined the king presenting him with a new set of clubs or could he dare to imagine a new putter. Perhaps it would be made of 24 carat gold or have a diamond crusted handle. That, he thought, would exceed his expectations. A few days later, the kings ambassador arrived at the hotel where the golfer was staying for a pre arranged audience. He brought with him the gift from the King. He explained to the golfer how important his contribution had been and how grateful the king was. He then handed him an envelope.

The golfer was shocked when he opened it. Inside was a document, a legal contract giving the golfer ownership of a golf club in that country. An 18 hole golf club spread over 40 acres of land. He was astonished and speechless. He had not imagined receiving such a gift – yet it was exactly what he had asked for as well as being so much more!

God doesn’t just exceed what we think. He actually thinks in a completely different way to us. Our God is so much greater than we often give him credit for and in so many ways.
I wonder, do we limit God’s blessings by our own expectation of what he can or can’t do? Do we deny ourselves all he wants to shower upon us or perhaps not draw upon him fully in times of trial or difficulty. He can and will do more than we think or imagine. Do you really believe that and will you act on that today? He is able. The real question is “ are we willing”?

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory
