“We’re all off on a summer holiday”
Some of you will be reading this later in August when you return from a summer holiday whilst others of you will have already had yours. Yet again (here in the UK and also in parts of Europe), the weather has been the talking point. Generally cloudy and wet, record rainfall in June, a short heatwave with the hottest day for two years in July. All too often preparation and packing can feel a rush, travelling at peak times invariably means delays and soon it’s time to come home. Perhaps no surprise then that often I hear the comment “I’ve come back home” or “I’ve returned to work” to finally get some rest!
I wonder. Have we got so caught up in the pace of life today that we are so busy “doing” that we have lost sight of what “being” a Christian means? Does the pace of life leave us too little time to worship properly? Have we inadvertently substituted a busy schedule of Christian activities and attending meetings for building a deeper per-sonal relationship with Christ?
Katie Warner recently shared the following poem, which it seems to me reminds us of the vital importance of cultivating our relationship with Christ.
In the stillness of this moment, as we seek again your face,
In the beauty of this quiet, may we know once more your grace.
For your love is without measure and your mercy knows no bounds.
Come surround us with the father’s strong em-brace.
As we gaze upon your beauty and behold your loveliness,
As we turn our eyes toward you may we glimpse your holiness.
For your love is without measure and your mercy knows no bounds.
Come transform us with the Son’s sweet fruitful-ness.
When we meet a world that’s broken and we feel it’s pain and woe,
Will you send us out in power? Will you show us where to go?
For your love is without measure and your mercy knows no bounds.
Come immerse us in the Holy Spirit’s flow.
Have we got the balance right both as individuals and as a church fellowship between all that “we try to do” and “growing in grace”?
