For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything (Thought for Feb 2020)

For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. Hebrews 3:4

At our 2020 Church AGM in January, the joyful news that the Fellowship was in the process of purchasing a manse was announced. This will be the first time the church has owned separate residential accommodation in Horsham. There have been previous attempts to acquire a property for use by the pastor. Indeed a fund was set up in the 1970s, but that money was eventually spent on Church renovations.

However, now for the first time, this goal is in sight and God willing, will be accomplished during the spring. Not having our own manse has hampered plans in the past and the church has instead had to rely on the Association for housing support. It also impinges on the life of the Fellowship generally. It’s not the legal title to a property that is the use but rather a resource that helps support the local work we do.

As I thought about this, Hebrews ch3 v4 came into my mind. The irony of the property in question is that it wasn’t built by a well known housebuilder as part of a speculative development, but is on the self build estate on the northeast of Horsham. It’s also been thoughtfully extended by its current owner. Another example of being “built by someone”.
The chain is also very short, which we are taking as another sign that this time, stepping out in faith, this way is the right step! However, at the end of the day, we know God is sovereign and if this is meant to happen it will. How the funding has come together for this is also being taken as a sign we are acting in step with his will.
We need to pray the purchase will complete smoothly, we need to pray the financing put in place will be paid off without this being to the detriment of other parts of our mission and we need to pray this will be a wonderful resource in his service.

How comforting it is then, that verse 4 goes on to say that God is the builder of everything. I wonder if we think about this when we think of ourselves.

We are his workmanship too!
