New years refurbishment (Thought for Jan 2015)

Early last year I had my piano refurbished. Bit of an expensive business but something I’d wanted to do for some time. It Was taken away by the Piano Centre in town and had its ‘innards’ replaced or thoroughly cleaned. Strings, hammers and felts were replaced.I had the opportunity to pop into the workshop during the 6 weeks work and saw the instrument in pieces being carefully ‘operated’ on.

When my lovely piano (complete with its figured walnut case, of course) came home from ‘hospital’, it was almost like new
— although the new strings have needed adjustment once or twice while they settle down. But, while many of the parts were new, it was still a refurbishment. The instrument is about 120 years old.

People go to a lot of trouble and expense to ‘refurbish’ their bodies — and this Christmas just gone there must have been an awful lot of expenditure on gifts of the ‘smellies’ and pampering varieties. But whatever we do, we won’t have new bodies in this life.

However, I wonder if, spiritually speaking, we make do with just refurbishment. We like to hear a good preacher, have a blessed time in worship and fellowship with others at church, but unlike the piano and our physical bodies that can only be
refurbished, God wants us to be made new spiritually, thus bringing transformation to our whole lives.

Romans 12: 2 says:
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. And the Lord Jesus
says in Revelation 21:5

“Behold, I make all things new.”

Although that may be speaking of the new heaven and new earth yet to be, in fact the Lord Jesus is able to make us new and renewed people for him now. And that’s where our theme verse for 2015 assures us — that his word, the Gospel itself
will accomplish that new life in you and me.
