Father in Heaven. We approach You as we near the meeting point between the old and the new year. We remember Your precious Son being born as the Saviour of His people; we remember His perfect life and suffering; we remember His sacrificial death on the cross for all believers; His death-conquering resurrection, in which we find our eternal life; His ascension to Your right hand, where He is now, interceding for us. And we are reminded of His Words, spoken before He went to take His place at Your right hand: “‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” And in light of that, we pray,
- With thankfulness. Thank you for His rule over all things. All authority is His, and we take great comfort in having Him as our King. We thank you for His sure presence with us. We thank you that He is for us, His redeemed people, and that no longer have we You as our enemy, but have peace with You through Him.
- For strength in Him. We pray that we may not be among the doubters, but the worshippers For that, grant us that we may be strong in His teaching, in doctrine, that we may know our God well and intimately, and so that we may make Him known aright. Keep us from error, and lead us into all truth by Your Spirit. May we have Your passion for making disciples of all nations. There are your Elect, whom You have known from before the beginning of the world — may we share Your desire to find them, teach You to them, and oh, may You be pleased to draw them to Yourself!
Our unchanging God, 2020 has been hard, but You have neither left us nor forsaken us. We thank you for that. Lead us into 2021, granting us a thankful and strong heart to trust You. Hold us in Your hands, and fulfil Your purposes in and through us. To you be all the glory. Amen.
