We have been blessed over the past month in being able to keep meeting in the Chapel on Sunday mornings, and with the air conditioning kindly provided by the doors and windows open! It reminds me of a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson entitled ‘The Vagabond’, in which comes the verse:

Or let autumn fall on me White as meal the frosty field -
Where afield I linger, Warm the fireside haven -
Silencing the bird on tree, Not to autumn will I yield,
Biting the blue finger. Not to winter even!

Our fingers, hopefully didn’t turn blue (white possibly!), and we resisted the warm fireside haven, but for the intrepid attenders, perhaps the last lines should read: Not to Autumn will I yield, Nor to Covid even!

But seriously, with due attention given to safe social distancing and sanitising gel, we give thanks that some of us were able to meet physically, and others by You Tube and/or zoom. It was good too to share communion on that first Sunday – as we shall be this first Sunday morning of the new year.

We also have an evening service in the chapel on this first Sunday, though only via zoom on the remaining weeks of January. Please join us if you can, one way or the other.

(Just a reminder regarding Communion, otherwise called The Lord’s Supper – it’s  for all church members and baptized believers who love the Lord Jesus in sincerity and truth. If you have not yet been baptized by immersion, please ask our pastor or one of the elders if you wish to consider baptism and church membership, or if you have questions about what being a Christian is.)

After 14 years of holding our Carols in the New Street Garden, we were unable to do so this year because of Covid restrictions. However, instead – and so that we could give voice to the Christmas carols – we had Carols in the Car Park as we celebrated Christ’s coming in our Christmas morning service al fresco. It was a cold but bright sunny morning and c20 ‘happy voices did rend the jocund air asunder’, to misquote a carol, and Calix brought us an encouraging word from Luke 1: 38, ‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’.
